Inside Inspiration: Part 1

What we know today as International Women’s History Month began as a small celebration in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 1978. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women built a series of “Women’s History Week” events to correspond with International Women’s Day, observed on March 8.

That simple local event has grown into an international commemoration of the contributions of women throughout history, honoring achievements that inspire all of us and help form the foundation for the future progress of women everywhere.

In honor of those who paved the way and galvanized everyone who followed in their footsteps, we asked the people of Palo Alto Networks to share some words of wisdom that inspire them every day.

Each week this month, we’ll feature quotes that motivate and move our employees, along with their take on what the quotes mean to them.

“At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.” ― Maya Angelou

Beyond our words and actions, making a genuine connection with our heart is what matters. The first step in breaking bias is to recognize the strength in our commonalities, while celebrating the beauty of our diversity.

“Words once spoken can never be taken back.”

Words spoken are irreplaceable. Words spoken are associated with good or bad moods. Bad words should not be spoken because of a bad mood, because the mood can subsequently change, but words cannot be changed. This especially applies to a workplace.

“Say yes to every opportunity until you’ve experienced enough to say no.”

This is a quote I actually came up with for myself when I left college. I’d always find ways to run back to my safety net and stick to a routine rather than try new things. I was happy in my bubble, but I was missing a sense of adventure in my life. I didn’t have ambition. I did as I was told and got my assignments done and lived my life.

Then I found my first internship in cyber security, and it became a creative playground for me to try all sorts of things. I met different kinds of people, tried new activities, and saw more than I ever would in my bubble. Since gaining that confidence and ambition, I knew that going forward I needed to step it up and be all in. Say YES! If it didn’t work out, then that’s a later issue, but why hide when you don’t know if it’s something to fear. I use that quote as a slogan for my life.

“Whatever you are, be a good one.” — Abraham Lincoln

You are measured by your own achievements, not by what others may think.

“You just can't beat the person who never gives up.”

When things are tough, don't give up. Rather, shift your perspectives or strategies toward the goal while maintaining adaptability in case the goal changes along the way.
