When we heard that James, Technology Innovation & Developer Relations, had not only completed the London Marathon but achieved his sub-three hour time goal and fundraising goal, we asked how he FLEXed his schedule and benefits to help make it happen! Here’s what he said:

“Achieving a sub three-hour marathon was the result of several months of training, and the flexible working hours in my role greatly enhanced my ability to get the training scheduled around my professional life. I generally train in the mornings, and as the training distances and durations increased closer to the event, knowing I could get my work done and achieve my objectives whilst still fitting in that training was really important to me and was a big factor in the successful result in the marathon. I actually over-achieved my professional objectives during the same period I was training for the marathon. I think regular exercise helps my ability to focus on objectives in both my personal and professional life.

I also used some of my FLEXBenefits towards equipment, not least the running trainers in which I completed the marathon! I also used them to contribute to gym membership, which is where I did additional strength and conditioning work alongside the running itself. Having easy access to the right equipment and facilities is a massive help when training.

It was also amazing to see so many of my Palo Alto Networks colleagues donating to the charity for whom I was fundraising, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. The charity has a personal significance to my family and I, and it was great to be able to raise money for them as part of the event.”
