Recruiter, JAPAC

I got my first job in recruiting in an unusual way. Several years ago, I decided to pursue my passion for technology and applied for a Junior IT Consultant position. About halfway through the interview, I realised that I had actually applied for a Junior IT Recruitment Consultant. Thankfully, the hiring manager had an open mind (and a great sense of humour). This mistake led me to discover an entirely new career path and blend two of my passions - people and technology. I mention it here because ever since then, I’ve made a point of keeping an open mind about every candidate that I interview. As the founder of a small bookstore once said, “there’ll always be serendipity involved in discovery”

What advice would you give to a candidate preparing for an interview?

Ask your Recruiter! We’re here to help guide you through every step of the hiring process. Just as there is no “one size fits all” solution to cybersecurity, each and every position, hiring manager, and interviewer is unique and will require a different approach. Asking your recruiter for advice that is tailored to your situation will set you up for success by minimizing external confusion.

How can someone be a more competitive candidate?

  1. Do some basic research on the company, products, and culture (if you’re reading this, you’re already off to a great start). Come prepared with questions on anything that needs clarification.
  2. Get a good night’s sleep the night before your interview. When you’re well-rested, you’re more focused and alert (and less likely to resort to caffeine).
  3. Don't stress about unexpected interruptions during your Zoom meeting. Stir-crazy kids and cute pets are more than welcome to make cameo appearances.
