About us
Chronosphere, a Palo Alto Networks company, is the observability platform built for control in the modern, containerized world. Chronosphere empowers customers to focus on the data and insights that matter by reducing complexity, optimizing costs, and remediating issues faster. Chronosphere reduces data volumes and associated costs by 84% on average while saving developers thousands of hours. Recognized as a leader by major analyst firms, Chronosphere is trusted by the world's most innovative brands, including DoorDash, Affirm, and Zillow.
About the role
The Identity & Access Management team owns our authentication and access control platform: the APIs, libraries, services, and data stores other engineering teams integrate with to control who can do what in their part of the product. Other teams write the access rules for their own features. This team builds the system they plug into. We are increasing our investment in this area, and the team is growing rapidly.
The role sits between platform engineering and product. Your team's systems sit in front of every dashboard, API, and piece of customer data, so reliability and security posture are yours to protect. Most of our roadmap is customer-driven, though: access control granularity, SSO and SCIM coverage, and service account scoping come up during procurement and renewal.
Qualifications
You will
Partner with your product manager to assess customer needs, co-create the roadmap, and own delivery against it. Your product manager (PM) owns direction. You ground it in what is buildable and drive execution. Both of you bring empathy for the administrators who live in these systems every day, so you can tell which access control gaps are genuinely blocking customers.
Balance large investments alongside a steady cadence of customer requests while ensuring the team can deliver at a predictable pace.
Guide the team through architectural decisions and technical design in the evolution of our granular access control framework, which nearly every other team integrates with.
Hire and onboard engineers. Coach them through any growing pains, and evolve the team's norms and delivery cadence.
Monitor SLOs, SLAs, and health of the system in production and take timely action to meet our reliability goals.
Work with our security and compliance partners on reviews, audits, and the commitments we make to customers.
How you will start
In the first month, you will learn our authentication and authorization systems, how customers manage access today, and where they get stuck. You will spend time meeting people and developing relationships on your team, sister teams, and cross-functional partners.
In 3 months, you will manage the team's day-to-day work. As you continue to ramp up on technical and execution strategy, you will partner with your manager and the team's PM to define the roadmap for our broader access control needs.
After 3 months, you will own execution, continue growing the team, and show progress on the more ambitious items on the roadmap. As your team ships, you will continue to evolve the norms and working agreements that keep it healthy and predictable.
You have
Empathy for customers and engineers to enable your team to do their best work.
Strong product sense. You hold a technical and a product point of view at the same time.
Familiarity with enterprise software and the expectations security-conscious customers place on access control, authentication, and auditability.
Experience shaping how a team operates and how it connects to the engineers on other teams who depend on it. You work with your engineers to set the norms, working agreements, and cross-team interfaces.
Ability to partner with a PM to define and execute on a roadmap that accounts for trade-offs, customer commitments, corporate/compliance requirements, and the organization's product strategy.
The technical depth to assess risk in design reviews, understand critical code paths, and evaluate engineering trade-offs directly.
Direct experience managing engineers. You have nurtured career growth, helped engineers increase their proficiency, and held engineers accountable to clear expectations.
Strong background in partnering with recruiting, making hiring decisions and closing hires, and building a diverse and inclusive team. We believe strongly that hiring is the responsibility of engineering management, and you should be able to demonstrate attracting, closing, and retaining engineers at multiple levels.
Experience building platform capabilities that other engineering teams adopt, driving adoption through collaboration and negotiation, and managing dependencies across product and infrastructure teams.
