Architecting My Future at HITEC: From Sala to Success

When I received the news that I would be attending my very first HITEC conference, I was ecstatic! And in my favorite city? How could I say no? New York is known to be a diverse  melting pot with a vibrant cultural scene. For an event aimed at accelerating the impact of technology leaders contributing to innovation and growth, I couldn’t imagine a more perfect place.

My suitcase was packed with my favorite outfits– ready to “dress to impress” in business casual attire. This pre-trip ritual brought me back to my upbringing, whenever I prepare to visit relatives and vice versa. It was the comforting routine of getting ready, putting on my best outfit, hair and makeup, just to end up sitting in the “sala” (living room) – a space where you know the best times and most cherished conversations unfold.

Upon landing, I headed over to Citi Headquarters to check in. The lobby was buzzing with such an infectious energy, making me feel comfortable enough to be myself and eager to meet new people. I had the privilege of connecting with individuals from across the United States, representing numerous industries and job fields. This exposure to such a diverse and engaged group truly set the tone of the days to come.

To no one’s surprise, the hot topic of the three-day conference was Artificial Intelligence. It was clear that AI isn't some distant concept; it's here, and we are at the forefront of shaping its future. The discussions reinforced the idea that instead of fearing AI, we should embrace it as a powerful tool to elevate our contributions and unlock new potential in our roles. Beyond the technological insights, the conference emphasized the crucial human element in leadership and career growth. I recognized a few leaders who I idolized throughout my high school corporate work-study experience. One of them being Guillermo Diaz who mentioned that true leadership involves not just individual achievement but also a commitment to lifting others up and empowering them to reach their full potential. This message resonated with me and aligned perfectly with the values instilled by my own culture. My parents raised me to believe that success is never achieved in silos; rather, it is the collective effort, support, and collaboration that pave the way.

At that moment, Guillermo’s panel made me feel as if I was sitting at my own relatives' sala. A place where laughs are shared, advice is given, and most importantly, I was surrounded by people who I can call familia (family). It was a powerful reminder that despite the professional setting, the bonds of shared culture, ambition, and community can create a deep sense of belonging where learning is encouraged and embraced. To anyone who is looking for inspiration, career growth, or even finding a place of belonging, I encourage you to make the most of the opportunities that are available to you. You never know whose path you will cross, or what "sala" you'll find yourself in.
