Spotlight: Lorie on 30 Years in Tech–and the Power of Curiosity

Lorie Papple’s self-described “diagnostic” mindset began during an auto-mechanic apprenticeship. There, she witnessed a massive shift in the industry as computers were integrated into vehicles. “It was my first real-world lesson in how data and technology could transform systems. Today, as we move through the era of AI, that lesson feels more relevant than ever,” shared Lorie. Read on for more insights from Lorie as she reflects on a 30-year career in technology and her excitement for what’s next.

What accomplishments are you most proud of in your career?

I take great pride in a 30-year technology career built on a foundation of hands-on experience and driven by curiosity. One moment that stands out was in 2005. I was working at a Canadian bank and, like most banks at the time, we were adapting to the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements.

I helped design and build a system that could scan servers, extract identity data, and transform it so that business owners could understand and attest to who had access to their resources. Turning that "chaos" of raw data into "context" for the business was a pivotal moment for me. It proved my "systems thinker" approach works and gave me the confidence to tackle more identity security and compliance complexities in the future.

Share why you are passionate about working with the solutions engineering team.

My Strategic Account Executive once told me, “if you help them, sales will come.” This keeps me grounded and aligns perfectly with how I’ve always approached building solutions and working as a Solutions Engineer.

I’ve been fortunate throughout my career to witness my ideas turn into functional realities. In Solutions Engineering, I have more opportunities to expand my curiosity from a single company to helping many customers across various industries. It’s a funny feeling to wish I were 30 again—not for the youth, but simply because I’m so energized by where this industry is going and wish I had an even longer runway to be a part of it.

Share an example of how you feel you make a strong impact with respect to our mission: being the cybersecurity partner of choice, protecting our digital way of life.

My impact comes from empathy. When a customer shares their successes or challenges, I can meet them where they are by translating complex technical and regulatory requirements into business-justified solutions. I get to be their partner rather than just a vendor.

There is a deep satisfaction in listening to a customer's unique challenges and being able to say, "I’ve been in or have seen similar situations, and I can help you find a better way forward." To me, being a "partner of choice" is the highest form of professional trust. It means that when global leaders are facing their most vulnerable moments or their most complex identity transformations, they don’t just want a tool; they want our perspective.

It feels like a quiet badge of honor. It’s the pride of knowing that our expertise is the foundation they build their growth upon. Being that partner means we have earned the right to be in the room because we’ve proven that we value their mission as much as our own. It’s a responsibility I don't take lightly; it keeps me focused on staying curious and continuously innovating.

What advice would you give to a young professional looking to enter the cybersecurity industry?

Don’t silo yourself. It’s easy to get focused on one specific tool or niche, but the real magic happens when you start to understand how applications are securely architected and integrated to provide a service.

Be the person who asks "Why?" and "What then?" Be curious about the upstream and downstream effects of actions you take. Cybersecurity isn't just about vaulting an account or blocking a threat; to me, it’s about understanding the synergy between People, Process, and Technology. If you can learn to see the connections in the whole ecosystem, you will never run out of problems to solve or ways to grow.
