From Code to Connection: BT on the Power of Identity and Trust

BT’s career journey from back-end developer to Senior Director in the Field Technology Office has taught him that true innovation starts with earning a customer’s trust. In this spotlight, BT shares how he navigates the rapidly evolving threat landscape and why he’s most proud of being a "trusted advisor" to his customers and partners.

Please tell us how your experiences led to your career in cybersecurity.

I began my career in tech as a back-end developer after previously working as a teacher. Thanks to a combination of youth and impatience, I made some less-than-ideal tech decisions for the sake of what I thought was efficiency. I learned the error of my ways after joining a data security company as a customer-facing product manager. There, I saw just how impactful cybersecurity could be - especially when you're able to show how strong controls can positively impact risk reduction and operational efficiency. That took me to spending more direct time with customers and field teams, which eventually led me to CyberArk - and now Palo Alto Networks!

The cybersecurity world is evolving rapidly. How do you navigate a constantly changing landscape?

The odds are stacked against security professionals these days. Environments are becoming more complex, threat actors are becoming more advanced, and it's easy to be distracted by the sheer number of offerings out there. Identity remains at the center of many attacks and it’s needed to advance to meet these evolving needs. As an engineer at heart, it’s tempting to grab the shiniest new tool off the shelf. But you have to earn the right to talk about that high-end tech. My goal is to do this by spending time helping organizations prioritize based on business outcomes, execute based on identity risk reduction, and drive adoption. This is always time very well spent to build partnership and get the right controls implemented to protect every identity.

You’ve emceed several company events in the past, including global kickoff events. What is it about these opportunities that excites you, and what drew you to take on such a visible role within the company?

For me, it was a great opportunity to challenge myself to overcome some of my introverted tendencies. I enjoy being able to add a little humor and entertainment to the proceedings, and being able to add more context to the material with my experience from the field. I am continuously humbled to have the opportunity to represent the Field Technology Office and our Identity Domain Consultants at these events.

What accomplishments are you most proud of in your career?

More than anything else, I'm proud to have earned the trust of so many customers, partners, and coworkers. Whether it's helping organizations translate business problems to technical solutions, influencing product direction based on what our customers and the market requires, or working internally to educate and support - none of that works unless the people you support see you as a trusted advisor and partner. The fact that even one of the thousands of smart people that work in our industry trusts me to help is already humbling on its own.

I've been spoiled by working with some of the most incredible leaders and individual contributors across the company, and it’s been an immense honor to be a part of the Identity Field Technology Office. It’s a group of incredible and inspiring technologists and advisors who are dedicated to making an impact with our customers all over the world.
